Medical experts react to Supreme Court’s ruling banning patents of human genes, but still allowing patents of synthetic DNA

Gene patent ruling could improve access, patient care
The Supreme Court’s decision last week to prohibit the patenting of human genes could improve patient care, boost access to genetic testing and cut costs, supporters say. The cost of gene testing will fall and access to second opinions will increase, according to the American Society for Clinical Pathology, one of the plaintiffs in the case. "Because of this ruling, patients will have greater access to genetic testing and scientists can engage in research on these genes without fear of being sued," said Dr. Myra F. Barginear, a New York oncologist.
