The discussion around how to define the concept of "health equity" has been going on for some time. In this commentary, Dr. Eve Higginbotham, Visiting Scholar in Health Equity, Association of American Medical Colleges, indicates that there are moral and economic factors that pressure us to move forward on this issue promptly. Health is a determining factor of social progress and health equity should be a mechanism that contributes in assuring a fair share of societal and economic opportunities among all population subgroups. She also highlights important efforts happening in the country at this moment and that it is crucial that we resolve our differences and push toward greater coordination of efforts to promote health equity.
