Resources to Help Reduce Disparities in Care

President Obama began his second inaugural address Monday by recalling the theme of equality articulated in the Declaration of Independence. He then added, “History tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they have never been self-executing.” Disparities in health and health care have been a persistent issue —- an issue driven by the desire for equality. Admiral David Satcher, former US Surgeon General, spoke to this difficulty at IHI’s 24th Annual National Forum, noting that “policies don’t necessarily make practices.” The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), which has been engaged in efforts to reduce disparities since its beginnings, recently distributed some helpful resources, including a “Six Steps to Curb Disparities” infographic; the RWJF/University of Chicago Finding Answers Intervention Research (FAIR) Database; and the Finding Answers Twitter Feed.
