Tompkins Cortland Community College Kick’s Off The Big Pink, Big Blue Fundraiser for Cancer!

Tompkins Cortland Community College [TC3] has a long history of fundraising to support the local cancer community with their annual “Big Pink, Big Blue” event.  Every spring students turn out in droves to form teams, to raise money, and to participate in the See-Saw Marathon & Dodgeball Event.  The Kick Off Event was no exception.

This year the Big Pink, Big Blue is generating funds in support of New York State Cancer Services Program Partnership of Cortland and Tompkins Counties.  The resources that this organization provides to our community are vital.  The work that they do in raising awareness for cancer screenings and for providing cancer screenings to people who are underinsured, or un-insured make a life-altering and sometimes a life-saving difference to populations in our area who’s needs are met by the gap that this organization fills. Where you live and how much money have available to you shouldn’t determine whether you live, or die. New York State Cancer Services Program Partnership of Cortland and Tompkins Counties bridges a huge gap in services.

I was thrilled, honored and humbled to have the opportunity to speak with school-mates about awareness of young adult cancers, the importance of self-exams, the need for continued advocacy and lobbying on behalf of the special needs of young adults living with a cancer diagnosis, being a supportive care-partner, as well as my own cancer journey.

The stories that students, faculty, and employees shared with me afterwards were powerful and moving.  They serve as a reminder of the importance of the work that we do in changing the cancer conversation.  To continually raising awareness in the young adult community of their cancer risks and educating them on how to advocate for themselves and others.  To work to put an end to cancer.  Not just hope for a cure.

TC3 will be hosting the Big Pink, Big Blue main event on Friday, April 13th.
